The best base near Bali Airport (DPS) depends on your flight time and holiday: Tuban and the airport area suit very early or late flights, while Kuta, Jimbaran, Seminyak and Nusa Dua put you by the beach. Kuta is about 3 km from the terminals.

The airport sits in Tuban in southern Bali, right beside the resort strip, so plenty of accommodation is within easy reach of Bali International Airport (DPS). Kuta is about 3 km away (a 10–15 minute drive in light traffic), with Jimbaran, Seminyak and Nusa Dua a little further. Most visitors base themselves by the beach and reach the airport by the official taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Where you stay really comes down to two things: the time of your flight, and the kind of holiday you want.

Beach base or cultural base?

The main choices pull in different directions. The southern beach areas, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, put the sea on your doorstep, with a spread from lively surf towns to calm, family-friendly resort enclaves, and they are the closest to the airport. Ubud, inland and about an hour and a half away, trades the beach for rice terraces, temples, yoga retreats and Balinese culture, making it the natural pick for a slower, greener stay. Tuban and Jimbaran are the handiest of all for the airport if a short transfer matters to you.

Hotels for an early-morning or late-night flight

A dawn departure or a red-eye changes the maths. Staying in the airport area or Tuban, only a few minutes from the terminals, removes the risk of a long, traffic-bound drive across the island and lets you sleep a little later. Some properties run a shuttle to the terminal, though it is never guaranteed, so check the timing when you book. From a beach or Ubud hotel, a pre-booked transfer or taxi is the reliable way to reach check-in on time, allowing plenty of buffer for traffic.

Booking tips

  • Confirm whether the rate includes an airport shuttle, and the exact pick-up time, before you rely on it.
  • Factor in traffic when you judge how far a hotel really is from the airport.
  • Book well ahead for the dry-season peak (roughly April to October) and holiday periods, when the island fills up.
  • If you are heading straight to the coast, plan the journey first with our guide to the beaches and resorts.
